Having my office set up just the way I like it has become one of the biggest keys to my daily productivity levels. When I transitioned back to working from home, I invested time in finding the right pieces and tech to create a space that truly works for me.
After years at a corporate desk job, I had grown accustomed to dual monitors and quality equipment. I also developed strong preferences for my desk chair and keyboard – which might sound particular, but when you spend significant time in your workspace, every detail matters for both comfort and efficiency.
Note-Taking Solutions That Actually Work
One of my primary goals when setting up my home office was reducing paper waste. As a reformed Post-It Note fanatic (I used to go through a package weekly – yes, really!), I knew I needed a sustainable alternative.
I switched to a new little whiteboard setup, and it’s been a game-changer. I use it primarily to keep my daily and weekly goals and priorities visible and top-of-mind throughout the day.
When I do give in to my love of paper products, it’s usually for a quick Post-It note in my compact popup holder – old habits die hard!
I recently gifted my dad a Rocketbook notebook since he’s also trying to reduce paper use, and he’s loving it. It might just be my next purchase too. If you’re considering this route, just remember you’ll need special pens – but honestly, who doesn’t love buying office supplies?
The Foundation: Desk and Chair
Standing Desk
One of the new-to-me tools I’ve added is a standing desk. For me, I was specifically looking for something to help me keep my focus and productivity high in the afternoon when my energy typically wanes.
The combination of the standing desk with my walking pad has been perfect – I can alternate between sitting, standing, and walking throughout the day based on what I’m working on and how I’m feeling.
Desk Chair
I think all of my friends were tired of hearing me talk about desk chairs! But I had fallen in love with the one I had at my old job and didn’t want to spend $800 to get the same chair. So the hunt began.
I bought a chair and returned it because it wasn’t tall enough in the back. My second purchase was the right one: Autonomous’ ErgoChair Pro was tall enough and deep enough for me. Super comfortable!
I initially thought the leg rest/recliner feature was something I would never use… Umm, wrong! Ever sit on a Zoom call that you’re mostly just having to listen to? Same – that’s exactly what the leg rest is for!
The Big Investment: Monitor
My monitor ended up being my biggest splurge, but it’s been absolutely worth it. I wanted to avoid needing a USB hub or connecting multiple display cables to my MacBook Pro. I’d also been curious whether one larger screen might be more efficient than dual monitors.
Enter my Dell 34 Inch Ultrawide Curved Monitor (P3421W). Having never used a curved monitor or anything this large before, there was definitely an adjustment period. I literally had to add a keyboard tray to my desk to position myself at the right distance from the screen. But the productivity boost has been incredible!
The Unexpected Game-Changer: My Walking Pad
Here’s something I didn’t expect to become essential to my setup: my walking pad. I use it under my standing desk, and it’s been so much easier to incorporate into my routine than I anticipated.
I was initially skeptical about whether I’d actually use it or if it would just become expensive floor decoration. But having the option to walk slowly while taking calls, reviewing documents, or even during lighter work tasks has been fantastic. It’s helped me stay more alert throughout the day and sneak in movement without disrupting my workflow.
The best part? It tucks away easily when I need the full desk space, and the noise level is minimal enough that it doesn’t interfere with video calls.
